The COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic

The COVID-19 pandemic is an infectious disease pandemic with the agent SARS-CoV-2 virus, currently affecting and causing damage globally. The outbreak began in December 2019, with the first reported outbreak in Wuhan City in Hubei Province in central China, originating from a group of people with unknown pneumonia. Local health officials confirmed earlier this group of people had contact, mainly with traders who worked and worked at Hoa Nam seafood wholesale market, where many animal species were sold and slaughtered wildlife and is thought to be the first outbreak of the disease, however, this conclusion is still controversial. Chinese scientists then conducted a study and isolated a new strain of coronavirus, temporarily called the 2019-nCoV by the World Health Organization, with at least 79.5% of the same gene sequence with SARS-CoV before. Human-to-human transmission has been confirmed, with outbreaks rapidly increasing in mid-January 2020.

The incubation period is 2 to 14 days, there is evidence that the disease may be contagious during this period and several days after recovery. Common symptoms of the illness include fever, cough, and shortness of breath, which can be fatal in severe cases. The first suspected cases were reported on December 31, 2019, with the first symptoms appearing more than three weeks earlier, on December 8, 2019. Hoa Nam Market is closed on January 1, 2020, and symptomatic patients are isolated. Afterward, close contacts of people suspected of having the disease were followed. On January 9, 2020, the first death from SARS-CoV-2 occurred in Wuhan.

The first confirmed cases of infection outside of China included two women in Thailand and one man in Japan on Chinese New Year.

On January 23, 2020, the Chinese government decided to block the city of Wuhan, the entire public transportation system and import and export activities were suspended. Until January 24, 2020, several nearby cities were isolated to control the spread of the disease, including Hoang Cuong, Ngac Chau, Xich Bich, Kinh Chau, and Chi Giang.
On February 11, 2020, the International Commission on Virus Classification (ICTV) officially named the new strain of coronavirus, SARS-CoV-2. On the night of March 11, 2020, the World Health Organization (WHO) made an official statement, calling "COVID-19" a "Global Pandemic".

As of April 15, 2020, more than 2 million COVID-19 infections have been confirmed globally in more than 200 countries and territories, with more than 127,000 deaths. In particular, more than 491,000 cases have recovered.

The response of governments around the world to protect the health of people and community groups around the world has been quickly conducted, including travel restrictions, quarantine blockade, and ban proclaim a state of emergency, use curfew, carry out social isolation, cancel crowded events, close schools, and other less important business and service facilities, encourage people to lift themselves raising awareness of disease prevention, limiting going out, and at the same time changing the business, studying and working model from traditional to online. Some typical examples include blockade for total quarantine in Italy and China's Hubei province; various curfew measures in China and South Korea; screening methods at airports and railway stations; restrict or cancel tourism activities to areas, regions, countries that are at high risk of epidemics, etc. In addition, schools have had to close nationwide or in some areas in more 160 countries, affecting 87% of students worldwide, as of March 28, 2020.
The worldwide effects of the current COVID-19 pandemic include human loss of life, social and economic instability, xenophobia and racism for ethnic Chinese and East Asia, the spread of false information online and conspiracy theories about viruses.
The possibility of virus remaining after recovery

A study published on February 27 on the JAMA Network found that the SAR-CoV-2 virus could remain in the patient's body for at least two weeks after no symptoms are present. Studies show that, although the virus remains in humans, most of them are very strong against the person's immune system, so the risk of infection during the recovery period is very low. The virus is spread through respiratory droplets emitted by the infected person, but those who recover have no symptoms of coughing, sneezing, and low viral load in the body, so the spread requires close contact.
Prevention and treatment

Prevent
Infrared cameras are installed at Wuhan Railway Station to check the body temperature of passengers before they board the train.
Symptoms of the illness include fever, shortness of breath and cough, which are described as "flu-like". To prevent viral infections, WHO recommends: "Wash your hands often, cover your mouth and nose when coughing and sneezing [and] keep at least 1 meter (3 feet) away from anyone who has symptoms of respiratory illness. such as coughing and sneezing, avoiding touching your eyes, nose, and mouth with unwashed hands. If you have a fever, cough or trouble breathing, stay home and seek immediate medical assistance by calling In advance, consult your physician or health center, follow the instructions of the local government. Stay up to date with disease information and follow the health care provider's instructions. " AllezyShirt Corona 2020 T-Shirt Collection
Governments in many countries recommend that people limit all unnecessary travel to countries and regions affected by the disease. There is no evidence that pets, such as dogsand cats, can be infected. China has banned the trade and consumption of wildlife.

For health care providers who care for an infected person, standard precautions need extra eye protection.

Although there is no specific treatment for new coronaviruses in humans, the US CDC recommends that infected people reduce their symptoms by taking fever-reducing analgesics (be careful not to give aspirin to children), drink water and rest. Some countries require people to report flu-like symptoms to their doctors, especially if they have been to mainland China.
Epidemiology is an important method for health authorities to identify sources of infection and prevent further transmission. Social distancing measures are also recommended to prevent transmission in the community.

Misconceptions that are floating about how to prevent viral infections like washing your nose, gargling with mouthwash, eating garlic ... are ineffective.

Handwashing

Hand washing is recommended to prevent the spread of disease. US CDC recommends that people wash their hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after using the toilet or when their hands are dirty; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing or sneezing. They recommend using a dry hand wash solution with at least 60% alcohol when soap and water are not available. WHO also advises people to avoid touching their eyes, nose or mouth if their hands are dirty
Quarantine

Quarantine is recommended for people diagnosed with COVID-19 and those who suspect they have been infected. Public health agencies have issued self-isolation guidelines, including notices for health care services over the phone and restrictions on all activities outside the home, except for receiving medical care. International; not going to work, school or going to public areas; Avoid using public transport, carpooling or taxis.

People who have recently traveled to a country with a widespread epidemic or had direct contact with a person diagnosed with COVID-19 have also been asked by some government health agencies to isolate themselves or carry out is currently in isolation for 14 days from the time of the last exposure
Social Distancing
Social Distancing is a way of controlling the spread of disease by minimizing close interpersonal contact. Methods include carrying out quarantine, applying travel or closing restrictions or restricting access to schools, workplaces, stadiums, theaters and shopping centers. Many governments currently enforce or recommend Social Distancing in epidemic-affected areas.
Methods of  Social Distancing include limiting travel, avoiding crowded areas and staying away from sick people.

Older people and people with serious chronic conditions face the risk of serious illness and complications from COVID-19 and have been advised by the CDC of the United States to avoid crowds and stay home as much as possible in outbreak area in the community.
Treatment

SARS-CoV-2 has no specific medication or vaccine yet, although efforts to develop it are underway. San Francisco-based VIR Biological Company is evaluating whether previously defined monoclonal antibodies (mAbs) are effective against viruses.

Gilead Science is actively discussing with researchers and clinicians in the United States and China about the ongoing coronavirus outbreak in Wuhan and the use of remdesivir as a treatment. Other antiviral drugs can also be used to treat, including indinavir, saquinavir, lopinavir/ritonavir, and interferon-beta.

The Chinese Academy of Sciences has selected 30 drugs to test, including existing drugs, oriental medicine, and biologically active natural products. These are not medicines used to treat diseases but were initially selected as "candidate" drugs for testing.
